Laurelwood Cemetery Company, celebrating almost 70 years of service, is located in Monroe County in Stroudsburg, Pa. William K. LaBar, the famed nurseryman and founder of LaBar’s Rhododendron Nursery in south Stroudsburg, is credited with chartering Laurelwood Cemetery Company under a non-profit charter in 1934. Labar recognized the need for a modern park-like cemetery in the county, and thus began Laurelwood on the site of an old duck farm on part of the nursery property.

Beginning with the first burial in 1935, Laurelwood has since grown to 20 acres of developed land, with another 15 acres in reserve for the future. The sweeping vistas of green lawn and gentle, tree-shaded knolls of Laurelwood stand as a testament to nature’s beauty during every season of the year. The many sections of Laurelwood are comprised of various gardens, including a veterans’ garden, the Masonic Section, recognized by the sundial feature at the center of the garden, the Laurel and Westview Gardens, the Hemlock Section, a headstone section with upright monument memorials, and the Gates of Heaven Catholic Section. The Gates of Heaven was founded in 1951 by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Scranton and the Board of Directors of Laurelwood, providing the only true Catholic cemetery area in Monroe County acceptable to all.

In a letter taken from the Laurelwood files, one of our families says, “It was actually a joy for us to choose a family plot in a beautiful memorial park like Laurelwood.” Another family says, “Laurelwood employees have extended themselves to us not only in a professional, but also in a personal manner in all our encounters. The impression one gets is that all the work is done with a loving hand.” At Laurelwood, we are proud of our fine reputation as one of the most beautiful cemeteries and memorial parks across the United States, and this beauty, peace, and heritage that mark Laurelwood’s past will continue to color its future. Laurelwood is a history of people — a perpetual record of yesterday and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today. Laurelwood prevails because each life is precious, worth loving and remembering…always.

Laurelwood Cemetery is located 26 miles north of Bethlehem and has always prided itself on delivering scenic and serene landscapes for families. If you are looking for a Monroe County cemetery, East Stroudsburg cemetery, Stroudsburg cemetery, Bangor cemetery, or Portland cemetery, then Laurelwood Cemetery would make an excellent choice.
