Lawrence incorporated the “old” part of the cemetery in 1917, and by 1960, Westminster Memorial Gardens was established. There are approximately 40 developed acres of land. Shughart, who was killed on Oct. 3, 1993, while serving as a sniper team member of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command with Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia. The events of his death were depicted in the movie, “Black Hawk Down.” He was buried Oct. 18, 1993.
